This is such a great Choyon Trunk: the style is unique and the art work and layout is superb. The front has a scene referring to Buddha's first teaching which he gave in the Sarnath Deer Park near Varanasi, where he set in motion the "first turning of the wheel of dharma." This is a very thematic trunk with all of the iconography working together to one main point. Please see the iconography for more details. This trunk has plenty of exquisite kyungbur (raised gesso) outlining the artwork on the top and sides. The front of the lid has some type of prayer or blessing; there is a title line following the greeting, then the actual prayer or blessing, I hope to have it translated shortly. The hinges on the back are solid-brass replacement hinges. The certificate of authenticity is brush-signed by the artist, Sha Wo Ta Shi. Sha Wo was recognized as the last Living Master artist in Tibet, he signed the certificate just prior to his death. The certificate's translation has a mistake in the transliteration of his name, this was not noticed until after his death and can not be corrected.
